Lionsgate to Distribute Kick-Ass

17 08 2009

Wow, today is a good day for geek movies. District 9 opens at number one,  Avatar Day tickets have come up online (not really, but more about that later) and Lionsgate has officially be chosen to distribute Kick Ass, the surprise smash from this year’s San Diego Comic Con and adaptation of Mark Millar’s series. From the press release:

Matthew Vaughn is an amazing talent and a true original, and he has brought a whole new mindset to the action genre with Kick-Ass,” said Jason Constantine, Lionsgate President of Acquisitions and Co-Productions. “Kick-Ass redefines the boundaries in terms of humor, action, story, character and tone—it’s the kind of movie that reminds us of why we go to the movies in the first place.  Lionsgate is thrilled to bring KICK-ASS home to give it the next-generation launching pad it deserves.

Lionsgate first got into the running alongside Universal and Paramount (see our article here) but I was quick to write it off as a long shot. I have never been so happy to be so wrong. As I said in the previous article, I feel that Lionsgate (which puts out the Saw movies each year) is the most likely to stomach the amount of violence that I have been told is in the movie and is in the comics. Today is a good day to be a Kick-Ass fan.
