Wilson, Paige and Tyler Joins Gunn’s “Super”

Super

Writer/director James Gunn hasn’t done work on a feature since 2006 with his underappreciated sci-fi horro Slither, but he is now hopping back in the directors seat for Super, a film “taking aim at the Superhero genre,” according to Variety. Normally, this would have my blood boiling, but seeing as the names “Jason Friedberg nor “Aaron Seltzer” appear anywhere in the article, it may actually be tolerable.

Wilson…plays an average guy who takes on the pseudo-superhero alter ego of the Crimson Bolt, after watching his wife (Tyler) fall under the spell of a charming drug dealer. Lacking super powers, he compensates by swinging a trusty wrench.

I’m not sure when it started, but there is a rash of superhero-without-superpower movies coming our way the next few years. Blame Watchmen if you like, but we now have Kick-Ass, Defendor and now Super all coming down the chute with the same basic premise.  Shucks, I guess we’ll just have to see them all and report back.
