There Can Only Be One… Highlander Remake

23 09 2009

A Highlander remake brought to you by the studio behind Twilight, directed by the man behind Fast & Furious and the producer of xXx: State of the Union and Torque – yeah I can already see where this is headed. Summit Entertainment announced that Justin Lin will direct a reboot of Highlander in hopes of starting another franchise tentpole after the financial success of Twilight.

Lin who helmed the abysmal Annapolis and the last two movies in the Fast & Furious franchise is joined by producer Neal H. Moritz  (Made of Honor, Stealth) who is also working on remakes of 21 Jump Street and Flash Gordon, in addition to original Highlander producer Peter Davis according to Variety. Art Marcum and Matt Holloway who were credited with 2007’s Iron Man are producing the screenplay, so there is some hope, but the duo did also pen Punisher: War Zone so take that with a grain of salt.

I would love to be excited for another run of 80s cheesy fun, but the production team assembled right now has me worried. Lin did direct the sleeper drama Better Luck Tomorrow that was pretty solid, but we’ll have to really cross our fingers. Let’s face it: there’s no way to match mid-80s Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery hamming it up. Trust in MacLeod, in the end there can only be one.

Just in case you forgot how ridiculous the original was…
