Spider-Man Spinoff ‘Venom’ Still On The Way

29 09 2009

After making the announcement earlier this year, the writing team of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick behind Zombieland has confirmed they are working with Sony which is moving forward with the project. Despite the negative reaction to the character in Spider-Man 3, Sony remains committed to giving the character his own spin-off movie.

Wernick confirmed to Sci-Fi Wire that the duo had submitted two drafts of the script to Sony and was waiting to hear back on a production schedule. It has been rumored that a Venom movie may tie-in to the Spider-Man film series similar to the way Marvel linked Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk. If Sony goes down that road it is looking increasingly likely that they might fit in with Spider-Man 5 or 6 which already have writers attached, but at this point do have any stars or a director.

Many people blame the influence from Sony in forcing Sam Raimi to shoehorn Venom into the third Spider film for sinking the film’s momentum. As a fan, I’ll admit I loved Venom as a character, but he always worked better as the villain than an anti-hero, and even among fans I have yet to hear anyone who thinks giving him his own movie is actually a good idea, even if they had gotten the story right.
