Weekend Preview: Lying Toys Whip Zombies

2 10 2009

September is finally over and it is quite clear from the movie releases: all four movies are actually being viewed as quality cinema. It almost makes me want to shed a tear. Your weekend preview is right after the jump.

The Invention of Lying

Directed By: Ricky Gervais, Matthew Robinson

Written By: Ricky Gervais, Matthew Robinson

Starring: Ricky Gervais, Jennifer Garner, Johan Hill, Louis C.K., Jeffrey Tambor, Rob Lowe, Tina Fey

Logline: A comedy set in a world where no one has ever lied, until a writer seizes the opportunity for personal gain.

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 58%

Geek on Film Opinion: The cast is completely stacked but so was the cast of Year One. Critics have claimed that the film is full of clichés, but with Gervais at the lead it is hard to imagine that there won’t be a lot of laughs.

Toy Story 3-D Double Feature

Directed By: John Lasseter

Starring: Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Don Rickles, John Ratzenberger, Joan Cusack, Kelsey Grammer

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 100% / 100%

Geek on Film Opinion: Two of the first and best Pixar movies ever made (and while there are only nine of them, that is still saying A LOT). Please, revisit your childhood.

Zombieland

Directed By: Ruben Fleischer

Written By: Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick

Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin

Logline: In the horror comedy Zombieland focuses on two men who have found a way to survive a world overrun by zombies

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 89%

Geek on Film Opinion: Critics are absolutely loving it despite the fact that it looks to be over-run with stock characters. This may surprise a lot of people and will most definitely take the top spot this weekend. Expect a review on Monday.

Whip It

Directed By: Drew Barrymore

Written By: Shauna Cross

Starring: Ellen Page, Marcia Gay Harden, Drew Barrymore, Kristen Wiig

Logline: In Bodeen, Texas, an indie-rock loving misfit finds a way of dealing with her small-town misery after she discovers a roller derby league in nearby Austin.

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 81%

Geek on Film Opinion: Critics don’t seem to have a big problem with it, but I have a rule that I don’t go see movies where a lead character’s name is “Smashley Simpson”
