The second weekend of October brings us only one wide release, and its not Where The Wild Things Are, so I don’t care. Blissfully, there are a couple of pretty good choices in limited release to whet your appetites. Your weekend preview after the jump.

It’s A Good Day To Be A Bluth

5 10 2009

Arrested Development

It has been three long years since Mitchell Hurwitz’ groundbreaking comedy Arrested Development was canceled by Fox, earning the ire of thousands and a cult status on DVD. Since its cancellation, fans have been waiting with bated breath for a movie to come out about the Bluth family (the last line of the show was “I don’t see it as a series, maybe a movie”), but despite everyone being on-board – including the illusive Michael Cera – the project has hit stall after stall, with a different cast member confirming or denying the project every few weeks. Now it appears that Arrested Development fans may finally get their wish: the screenplay is officially being written.

Trailer: Up in the Air

2 10 2009

Up in the Air

Movie Rule #62391: If you have “Passenger” by Iggy Pop in your film’s trailer, it better deliver. I’ve burned before (The Weather Man) and I refuse to be burned again.

Although it feels like just yesterday that the teaser trailer was released, we now have the theatrical trailer for Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air, starring George Clooney, Vera Farmiga, Anna Kendrick and a slew of comedic stars. While it is still hard to get a read on the comedy/drama balance that the film strikes (not too uncommon with Reitman’s films), this new trailer is certainly a lot brighter than the last, which told us that everything in our lives is simply weighing us down (a real uplifting message.) The film got incredible buzz coming out of the Telluride Film Festival and is sporting a big fat 100% over at Rotten Tomatoes. If you didn’t know already, this is a film to watch for. Check it out after the jump.

Trailer: Up in the Air (Teaser)

9 09 2009

Up in the AirYesterday we showed you a brand new clip from Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air and now, thanks to /Film, we have the brand new teaser trailer for the Walter Kirn adaptation.

Surprisingly, the trailer is more dramatic than it is funny (strange for a comedy), but at the same time the whole thing is kind of deep and it also displays what an incredible cast the picture has, images of Jason Bateman (sporting a beard?), Zach Galifianakis (who I didn’t even know was in the movie), Danny McBride and J.K. Simmons (who is in everything these days) coming one after another all while George Clooney delivers a speech reminiscent of his performance in Intolerable Cruelty.

Praise continues to role in from the film’s premiere and while I am not a fan of Juno, the film seems to be more along the lines of Thank You For Smoking. Teaser after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

Weekend Review: Extract

8 09 2009

Extract

To put it simply, Extract is a movie about dumb people. This is not an attempt to insult the film or even its characters. It is simply what Mike Judge knows. Beavis and Butthead was about two dumb teenagers who watch entirely too much television. King of the Hill is about a neighborhood of dumb Texans just trying to live a working life. Office Space is about dumb computer programmers who are bored. Idiocracy is about future dumb people. And in that same vain, Extract is a movie about dumb people who work at a company that produces flavor extracts. Read the rest of this entry »

Weekend Preview: Three Days of Meh

4 09 2009

The weird movie month that is September has begun and I wish I could say that I was excited, but when you have a summer blockbuster afterthought and two lukewarm comedies to start it all off, it is a bit challenging. Have a fun Labor Day weekend and we will see you back in full force on Tuesday.

Spoiler warning for anyone who hasn’t seen recent clips and interviews. Really who’s going to pass up more Beavis and Butthead?
